Amplitude overview

Decision checklist

  • Buying consideration: Use the current event-based page, not an older MTU or US$49 starting-price citation. The public Plus estimator did not provide a reliable higher-volume rate for this run, so no paid event amount is assumed. Replay and other product allowances are separate. Confirm analytics retention, replay retention, volume tier and paid-feature access before purchase.
  • Operational fit: Cloud / SaaS with web and mobile instrumentation; support: Free documentation, help centre and Academy; paid support and professional services vary by agreement.
  • Evidence context: Verified on vendor site, with facts checked 2 Oct 2026.

What Is Amplitude?

Amplitude helps product teams investigate how users move through onboarding, adopt features and return over time. It combines product analytics with session replay and other products that have their own limits. The current pricing page uses event volume rather than the older user-count framing. Define what a meaningful action represents before collecting every available interaction.

How to Evaluate Amplitude

Write an event plan for one journey, such as signup, completed setup and first successful action. Define identifiers, required properties and exclusions for staff or test activity. Compare a small set of known actions with the recorded events before interpreting a funnel. Review whether replay capture could expose sensitive data, then agree who maintains the taxonomy when the product changes. This is recommended evaluation guidance, not a claim of hands-on instrumentation testing.

Writing an Event Plan for Amplitude

Before installing, list the questions you want to answer, such as where new users drop off during setup. Define 10 to 20 key events with clear names and properties, decide how users are identified across devices, and exclude internal accounts. A small, consistent set of events produces better analysis than tracking every click.

Staying Within the Free Plan

The free plan’s event allowance covers many early-stage products. Avoid sending high-frequency events such as scrolls or mouse moves, and sample session replays rather than recording everything. Move to a paid plan when you need behavioural cohorts, custom formulas or more volume.

Who Should Use Amplitude?

Amplitude product analytics is a closer fit for event-based funnel analysis and retention measurement than a simple daily traffic counter. Budget time for tracking definitions and identity handling, not just the subscription.

Starting price: Free: up to two million events/month; Plus starts at US$0 for first two million events, then event-tier pricing. Model: Event-volume plans with product-specific allowances; unlimited seats listed; Growth and Enterprise custom.

Worked exampleA product team collecting 1.5 million events and capturing 8,000 replay sessions in a month fits the displayed Free allowances of two million events and 10,000 replays. Its software subscription is US$0 for that scenario, assuming Free features suffice. Engineering setup and data-review time are not priced here. A three-million-event scenario needs the current Plus estimate or sales confirmation rather than an invented overage rate.

Use the current event-based page, not an older MTU or US$49 starting-price citation. The public Plus estimator did not provide a reliable higher-volume rate for this run, so no paid event amount is assumed. Replay and other product allowances are separate. Confirm analytics retention, replay retention, volume tier and paid-feature access before purchase.

  • Conversion funnels
  • Retention analysis
  • Web and mobile session replay
  • Data masking
  • Experimentation and feature flags with limits
  • Guides and surveys with limits

Amplitude pros and cons

Strengths

  • Permanent free event allowance
  • Unlimited seats listed across plans
  • Analytics and replay available together
  • Dedicated taxonomy planning documentation

Limitations

  • Instrumentation still needs ongoing ownership
  • Replay has a separate monthly allowance
  • Advanced cohorts and formulas require Plus or above
  • Paid event-tier rate not reliably verified in this run
Biggest limitation: Results depend on consistent event taxonomy and identity mapping; event allowance does not remove separate replay, experiment or feature limits.

Biggest limitation Results depend on consistent event taxonomy and identity mapping; event allowance does not remove separate replay, experiment or feature limits.Product insights depend on correct events, identity stitching and metric definitions. An incorrect tracking model can produce convincing but misleading funnels and retention charts.Several products have independent billing units and limits; exceeding a cap can discard new data, so an inexpensive analytics estimate does not cover the whole suite.Clarity’s free access does not make replay a permanent or complete archive: standard recordings have a 30-day retention period, favourites can remain for up to nine months, capture limits apply, and individual recordings cannot currently be downloaded or deleted through the documented workflow.

Amplitude FAQs

Is Amplitude currently priced only by monthly tracked users?

The current official page describes event-based plans. Do not reuse an older MTU price without checking the selected current contract.

Does the two-million-event Free allowance include unlimited replays?

No. Free separately lists 10,000 replay sessions/month. Other platform products also have their own volume or feature limits.

Does Plus require a card even within the first two million events?

The pricing page states that Plus requires a credit card, while Free does not. Check the selected plan during signup.

Can I create the same advanced custom formulas on Free?

The current comparison places custom events and formulas on Plus and higher tiers. Confirm the specific calculation before choosing Free.

Should a signup funnel count every button click as an activation?

No. Define the completed product action you care about and verify its events. A click can precede a failed or abandoned action and distort the funnel.

Does adding ten analysts automatically create ten seat charges?

The current page lists unlimited seats on every plan. Usage volume and required features still affect the subscription; confirm any negotiated agreement separately.

We read pricing and plan limits from Amplitude's own pages (listed above) on the dates above. Where a vendor does not publish a price we can verify, we say so rather than estimate. Spotted something out of date? Tell us.
