Claude Code vs Cursor: Which AI Coding Tool Fits You?

Claude Code vs Cursor: Which AI Coding Tool Fits You?

Quick Verdict

Claude Code

Choose Claude Code if you prefer to delegate whole tasks, such as a refactor, a migration, a bug hunt or a new feature across many files. It also suits you if you work in the terminal, use JetBrains or another non-VS Code editor, or want one subscription that also covers Claude’s chat app.

Cursor

Choose Cursor if you want an AI-first editor with fast autocomplete and visual diffs, like switching between models from different companies, or want the cheapest paid agentic plan in India through Cursor Start.

Claude Code and Cursor have grown towards each other. Claude Code started as a terminal agent and now has a desktop app, IDE extensions and a web version. Cursor started as an AI code editor and now runs cloud agents, a CLI and a phone app. Both can read a codebase, edit many files, run commands and keep going on long tasks.

The difference is where each one puts you. Cursor is an editor with an agent built in, so you stay inside the code, watching completions and diffs as they appear. Claude Code is an agent that works alongside whatever editor you already use, so you hand off a task and review the result. Which one suits you depends more on how you like to work than on which is “smarter”.

TL;DR: What Most Comparisons Miss

  • You don’t have to choose. Claude Code’s VS Code extension also installs in Cursor, and Cursor offers Anthropic’s Claude models inside its own agent. Plenty of developers use both.
  • Cursor is now owned by SpaceX. SpaceX completed its $60 billion acquisition of Cursor’s maker, Anysphere, on 14 August 2026, and Cursor is being folded into SpaceX’s AI division. Pricing and model access haven’t changed so far, but teams with strict vendor or data policies should review the current terms.
  • India has a cheap Cursor plan with a catch. Cursor Start costs ₹649 a month with UPI, but it covers only Cursor’s own models (Grok and Composer), not Claude or GPT.
  • Claude Code has no free tier. It starts with Claude Pro at ₹2,000 a month on annual billing in India, or $20 a month in the US, and the same plan covers Claude’s chat app.
  • The limits work differently. Claude Code runs on five-hour usage windows plus a weekly cap, shared with your Claude chats. Cursor gives a monthly dollar allowance for third-party models and a separate, larger pool for its own models.
  • Only Cursor does tab autocomplete. If you rely on inline suggestions as you type, Claude Code doesn’t replace that.

How Each One Works

Claude Code: an agent that works beside your editor

Claude Code runs in your terminal, as VS Code and JetBrains extensions, in a desktop app for Mac and Windows, and in the browser at claude.ai/code, including the Claude mobile app. You describe a task, and it reads the relevant files, makes a plan, edits code across the project, runs your tests and commands, and reports back.

It’s built to be shaped around your project. A CLAUDE.md file holds standing instructions such as coding conventions and test commands. Skills, subagents, hooks and slash commands let you package repeat workflows. MCP servers connect it to GitHub, databases, browsers and other tools. It also runs headless in CI pipelines and through a GitHub Action.

Recent updates point to longer, more independent work. Auto mode now runs by default on Pro, Max and Team plans, letting Claude Code work for longer while still stopping on risky commands. The desktop app gained a built-in browser in September 2026, so it can check docs or a running web app as it works. A research-preview review feature sends a fleet of bug-hunting agents through your code in the cloud.

Cursor: an editor with agents built in

Cursor is a standalone code editor built on VS Code, so extensions, themes and keybindings carry over. Its core is Tab, a fast autocomplete that predicts multi-line edits as you type, plus an Agent that plans and edits across files from a chat panel. Cloud agents run tasks in the background while you keep working, and Bugbot reviews pull requests.

Cursor has spread beyond the editor too. It now has a CLI, an iOS app that can launch and steer agents remotely, plugins, MCP servers, hooks and skills. In August 2026 it began an early beta of Origin, its own code hosting.

Model choice is Cursor’s other big draw. Paid plans include Cursor’s own models, Composer and Grok, alongside third-party models from Anthropic, OpenAI and Google. You can pick the right model per task or let Auto mode choose.

Usage Limits and Surprise Costs

The two tools meter usage very differently, and that shapes the experience more than the headline price.

Claude Code shares your Claude plan’s allowance with Claude’s chat apps. Usage is measured in five-hour windows plus a weekly ceiling, and Max multiplies Pro’s allowance by 5x or 20x. Anthropic doubled Claude Code’s five-hour limits in May 2026. If you hit a limit, you can wait for the window to reset or turn on optional usage credits billed at API rates, up to a monthly cap you set.

Cursor splits each paid plan into two monthly pools. One covers Cursor’s own models with generous usage. The other is a dollar allowance for third-party models such as Claude and GPT, which is where most surprise bills come from. Pinning an expensive frontier model for agent work drains that allowance far faster than Auto mode does. Past the allowance, usage is billed at API rates unless you cap it. Cursor faced a backlash in July 2025 when its Pro plan moved from fixed request counts to usage-based billing, and it later rolled back limits and offered refunds.

In practice, Claude Code users hit limits as a pause (“wait until 4 pm”), while Cursor users hit them as a bill. Which one you prefer depends on whether time or money is tighter.

Using Them Together

The most common setup among heavy users isn’t a choice at all. Claude Code’s IDE extension installs in Cursor because Cursor is built on VS Code, so you can keep Cursor’s Tab autocomplete for hands-on editing and hand larger tasks to Claude Code in the same window. The cost is two subscriptions. A middle ground is Cursor Pro with Claude selected as the model for agent tasks, which uses Cursor’s third-party allowance instead of a separate Claude plan.

Who Should Choose Which

Pick Claude Code if you think in tasks rather than keystrokes. Developers who write a clear brief, let the agent work through a refactor or feature, and then review the diff tend to get the most from it. It also fits people who live in the terminal, teams on JetBrains, and anyone who already pays for Claude and wants coding included.

Pick Cursor if you want AI woven into every keystroke: fast completions, inline edits and an agent one panel away. It also suits developers who like testing different companies’ models on the same problem.

For students and early-career developers in India, Cursor Start at ₹649 a month with UPI is the cheapest way into a paid agentic coding tool. Expect to stay on Cursor’s own models, since Claude and GPT aren’t included.

If you’re not a developer and want to build an app by describing it, neither is the easiest starting point. Our Replit vs Lovable comparison covers tools built for that. If neither tool here fits, our Cursor alternatives and Cursor vs GitHub Copilot guides cover the wider field. ChatGPT users should also know that OpenAI’s Codex agent is now included on every ChatGPT plan, as covered in our guide on whether ChatGPT Plus is worth it.
