ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month in the US and ₹1,999 a month in India. Whether that’s worth paying depends less on how much you use ChatGPT and more on what you use it for. A lot also changed this year that most “is it worth it” articles haven’t caught up with: ads, a discontinued video tool, and a free plan that has quietly become more generous.
TL;DR
- In India, try Go before Plus. OpenAI has offered ChatGPT Go free for 12 months to eligible users in India since 4 November 2025. For everyday chat, that free year may be all you need.
- Check your Go renewal date. If you claimed the free Go year in November 2025, it starts ending from November 2026 and renews at the normal monthly price unless you cancel. Look under Settings, then Account.
- Part of what Plus buys in India is no ads. OpenAI started showing ads on the Free and Go plans in India in late August 2026. Plus, Pro and Enterprise remain ad-free.
- Don’t pay for Plus because of Sora. OpenAI shut down the Sora app and website on 26 April 2026. Many guides still list Sora video as a reason to upgrade. If AI video is what you’re after, see our free AI text-to-video generators instead.
- Ignore the message caps quoted elsewhere. OpenAI’s pricing page now lists everyday text chats as unlimited on Free, Go, Plus and Pro. Figures like “160 messages every 3 hours” are out of date. The limits now sit on tools: uploads, images, voice, deep research and reasoning models.
- Go and Plus read the same amount of text. Both get the same context window: about 40 pages pasted into a quick chat and about 320 pages for reasoning. If long documents are your reason to upgrade, Plus won’t help. Only Pro raises that ceiling.
- Codex alone isn’t a reason to upgrade. OpenAI’s coding agent is now included on every plan, including Free and Go, with usage limits. Plus adds more usage and Codex Cloud. If coding is your main use, compare dedicated editors in our Cursor vs GitHub Copilot guide first.
- The break-even is lower than you’d think. ₹1,999 a month is about ₹66 a day. If you bill ₹500 an hour, Plus pays for itself once it saves you about four hours a month.

What Each Plan Costs
| Plan | India | US | Ads | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | ₹0 | $0 | Yes (India, US and Europe) | Occasional questions |
| Go | ₹399/month (free for 12 months for eligible users during OpenAI’s India promotion) | $8/month | Yes | Daily chat, students, light writing |
| Plus | ₹1,999/month | $20/month | No | Work use: research, long documents, reasoning-heavy tasks |
| Pro | From ₹10,699/month for the top tier | From $100/month, with 3 usage tiers | No | People who hit Plus limits every week |
India prices include GST and can be paid in rupees through UPI. OpenAI hasn’t changed any plan price this year, but it changes limits and features often, so check the upgrade screen before paying.
Limits and Usage by Plan
Everyday text chat is now unlimited on every plan, subject to OpenAI’s abuse guardrails. What separates the plans is access to tools, stronger models and how much text ChatGPT can take in. OpenAI publishes some of these as numbers and others only as “Limited”, “Expanded” or “Maximum”. The tables below use OpenAI’s own wording, with numbers where OpenAI provides them.
Usage limits
| Free | Go | Plus | Pro | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Everyday text chats | Unlimited | Unlimited | Unlimited | Unlimited |
| Chat history | Unlimited | Unlimited | Unlimited | Unlimited |
| File uploads | Limited (3 a day) | More | Expanded | Yes |
| Files per project | 5 | 25 | 25 | 40 |
| Image creation | Limited | More | More, plus image creation with Thinking | Unlimited and faster |
| Voice chats | Limited | Expanded | Expanded | Unlimited |
| Voice with video | No | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Deep research | Limited | Limited | Expanded | Maximum |
| Memory | Limited | Longer | Expanded | Maximum |
| Codex | Limited | Limited | Expanded | Expanded, longer sessions |
| ChatGPT Work | Limited, desktop app only | Limited, desktop app only | Desktop, web and mobile | Longer sessions |
| Response speed | Slower at busy times | Slower at busy times | Fast | Ultrafast on eligible tiers |
| Ads | Yes | Yes | No | No |
Independent trackers report that Go and Plus each get about three hours of voice chat a day. OpenAI’s pricing page doesn’t show that number, so treat it as a guide.
Models and how much text each plan reads
| Free | Go | Plus | Pro | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Everyday model | GPT-5.6 Luna | GPT-5.6 Luna | GPT-5.6 Luna and the GPT-6 family | Same as Plus, with more usage |
| Reasoning models | GPT-5 Thinking Mini | GPT-5 Thinking Mini | GPT-6 Sol, GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and more | Plus models, plus Pro reasoning |
| Legacy models | No | No | Yes | Yes |
| Quick-chat context | 27K tokens (about 12 pages of input) | 54K (about 40 pages) | 54K (about 40 pages) | 128K (about 250 pages) |
| Reasoning context | Varies | 256K (about 320 pages) | 256K (about 320 pages) | 400K (about 680 pages) |
The second table is where most guides go wrong. Go and Plus have identical context windows. Plus doesn’t let you paste in a longer document than Go. It runs stronger reasoning models on what you paste.
Features that start at each paid plan
| Feature | Lowest plan that includes it |
|---|---|
| Scheduled tasks | Go |
| Voice with video | Go |
| Creating and sharing plugins | Go |
| Image creation with Thinking | Plus |
| Interactive tables and charts | Plus |
| Sites (build and host simple web pages from a chat) | Plus |
| Apps that connect to internal tools | Plus |
| Full Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Google Sheets extensions | Plus |
| Developer mode and record mode | Plus |
| Legacy models | Plus |
| Dots, an always-on agent | Pro |
Image creation is available on every plan, so even Free users can try our ChatGPT photo editing prompts before deciding whether higher image limits are worth paying for.
Every plan lets you opt out of having your chats used to train OpenAI’s models. That isn’t a paid feature.
What this means for Go vs Plus
If you mostly ask questions, draft messages and summarise articles, Go covers it, and the limits that matter to you (uploads, images, voice) are already higher than on Free. Plus earns its price when you need stronger reasoning models on hard problems, expanded deep research, full ChatGPT Work across devices, or features like Sites and the Office extensions.
The ₹1,999 Maths
Plus costs ₹1,999 a month, about ₹66 a day, against ₹399 for Go, so the real upgrade cost from Go is ₹1,600 a month. Here’s how that compares with your time, using simple numbers:
| Your hourly value | Hours Plus must save per month to cover ₹1,999 | To cover ₹1,600 over Go |
|---|---|---|
| ₹250 | 8 | 6.4 |
| ₹500 | 4 | 3.2 |
| ₹1,000 | 2 | 1.6 |
| ₹2,000 | 1 | 0.8 |
For a freelancer, consultant or developer billing ₹1,000 or more an hour, saving two hours a month is a low bar, as long as the time saved comes from features Go doesn’t have. For a student, the honest comparison is Go (free during the promotion) against Plus at ₹1,999. Unless you need Deep Research for projects, Go wins.
Who Should Pay for Plus
Plus is worth it if ChatGPT is part of your working day and you regularly do at least one of these: research that pulls from many sources, analysis of long reports, contracts or spreadsheets, coding with Codex beyond small fixes, or multi-step tasks you’d otherwise do by hand. It also makes sense if ads in the middle of your work are a distraction you’d pay to remove.
Who Shouldn’t
Skip Plus if you use ChatGPT a few times a week for quick questions, emails and summaries. If you’re in India and eligible, claim the free year of Go first and see whether you ever hit its limits. Skip it too if your main interest was AI video, since Sora is gone and nothing in Plus replaces it.
Also skip it if you already pay for another AI subscription that covers your main use. Plenty of people pay for two assistants that do the same job. If you only need occasional help, the free ChatGPT alternatives that work without login may cover it at no cost.
What Changed in 2026
Several changes this year make older comparisons unreliable.
- Go went global. OpenAI launched Go worldwide at $8 a month in January 2026, after it started in India in August 2025.
- Message caps on everyday chat went away. In August 2026, OpenAI made everyday text chats unlimited on every plan and moved the limits onto specific tools.
- Ads arrived. They began in the US in February 2026, reached 31 European markets in August, and came to India the same month, on Free and Go only.
- Sora shut down. The app and website closed on 26 April 2026, and the Sora API closed on 24 September 2026. OpenAI says unused ChatGPT or Sora credits can still be spent on Codex.
- Codex spread to every plan. OpenAI’s Help Center now lists it on Free and Go too, with usage limits, while Codex Cloud stays on Plus and above.
How to Check Your Go Renewal Date
If you claimed the free Go year in India, open ChatGPT, go to Settings, then Account, and look at your plan and next billing date. OpenAI pushed the billing date back 12 months when you claimed the offer, so the first free years end from November 2026. After that, Go renews at the normal monthly price unless you cancel. Set a reminder a few days before the date, then decide whether to keep Go, move to Plus or drop back to Free.
