ChatGPT and Claude cost about the same at the main paid tier in India: ₹1,999 a month for ChatGPT Plus and ₹1,999 for Claude Pro through the app stores ($20 on the web). The bigger differences are elsewhere. ChatGPT has unlimited everyday chat on every plan, a ₹399 Go plan, and image generation, but shows ads on its Free and Go plans in India. Claude reads much longer documents (up to 1 million tokens in chat on current models, against 256K on ChatGPT Plus), stays ad-free, and scores highest on Artificial Analysis’s intelligence index, but every Claude plan has session and weekly usage limits and it doesn’t create images.
Key Takeaways
ChatGPT vs Claude Prices Compared in India
| ChatGPT | Claude | |
|---|---|---|
| Free | ₹0 (ads in India) | ₹0 (no ads) |
| Entry paid | Go: ₹399/month | None |
| Main paid | Plus: ₹1,999/month | Pro: ₹1,999/month (App Store) or $20/month + tax on the web; ₹19,900/year in the App Store |
| Heavy use | Pro: from ₹10,699/month | Max: from $100/month (5x or 20x Pro usage) |
| Teams | Business, per user | Team: $25/seat monthly ($20 annual) |
ChatGPT’s rupee prices come from its India upgrade screens, which we also used in our ChatGPT vs Gemini comparison. Claude’s App Store price is from Apple’s India listing. Anthropic’s own pricing page shows USD prices before tax, so the rupee amount on the web depends on your bank’s exchange rate plus 18% GST. Check the upgrade screen in each app before paying.
Which Models You Get on Each Plan
| Plan | ChatGPT | Claude |
|---|---|---|
| Free | GPT-5.6 Luna | Sonnet and Haiku |
| Entry | Go: GPT-5.6 Luna, higher limits | (no entry plan) |
| Main paid | Plus: GPT-6 Sol at Medium and High thinking | Pro: Opus, Sonnet and Haiku |
| Top tier | Pro: GPT-6 Sol at all levels, GPT-6 Pro and GPT-6 Astra | Max: same models with 5x or 20x usage, plus Fable access within limits |
Sources: OpenAI’s models in ChatGPT help page and Anthropic’s pricing page, checked 29 October 2026. OpenAI says GPT-6 is still rolling out, so availability can vary by account.
How Independent Benchmarks Rank Them
Artificial Analysis, an independent testing firm, combines several reasoning, knowledge and coding tests into one Intelligence Index. On its leaderboard as of 27 October 2026:
| Model | Index score | Where you get it |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Opus 5.5 (max) | 58 | Claude Pro and above |
| Claude Sonnet 5.5 (max) | 56 | Claude Pro and above |
| GPT-6 Astra (max) | 53 | ChatGPT Pro (chat); Plus in Work and Codex |
| GPT-6.1 Sol (max) | 52 | API; ChatGPT uses GPT-6 Sol |
| GPT-5.5 Instant | 26 | Earlier ChatGPT default |
The top scores use the highest reasoning settings, which aren’t always the defaults in the chat apps. A benchmark index measures test performance, not how a tool feels for your work, so try both on your own tasks before deciding.
How We Compared Them
We used official OpenAI and Anthropic sources, Artificial Analysis benchmarks, third-party reporting on Apple’s India App Store listing and news on plan changes, checked in October 2026.
ChatGPT vs Claude Head-to-Head by Task
| Task | Better choice | Why |

How the Limits Work
ChatGPT’s everyday text chats are unlimited on Free, Go, Plus and Pro, subject to abuse safeguards. Its limits apply to specific features, such as file uploads, image generation, deep research and the most advanced thinking levels. If you mostly chat and write, you won’t hit a wall.
Claude limits usage by session and week. According to Anthropic’s Pro plan help page, Pro has a five-hour session limit that resets every five hours and a weekly limit across all models. How many messages that allows depends on message and file length, conversation length and the model you pick, and usage is shared between chat and Claude Code. Pro and Max users can turn on usage credits to keep working at API rates after reaching a limit. Light users rarely notice. People who paste long documents or code all day often do.
Long Documents: Claude’s Clearest Advantage
| Plan | Context window |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT Free | 27K tokens |
| ChatGPT Go and Plus | 54K for quick chat, 256K for reasoning (about 320 pages) |
| ChatGPT Pro | 128K for quick chat, 400K for reasoning |
| Claude paid plans | 500K or 1M tokens on current models in chat; 200K on older models |
Claude’s context window help page lists 1M tokens in chat for Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5, among others. For a full annual report, a long contract bundle or a large codebase in one conversation, Claude Pro holds several times more than ChatGPT Plus at the same price.
Images, Visuals and Video
ChatGPT generates images on every plan, with higher limits from Go and image generation with Thinking from Plus. Claude doesn’t. Anthropic’s help page says Claude “doesn’t generate photos or illustrations the way image-generation tools do,” though it can build charts, diagrams and interactive visuals in the conversation. Neither has a video generator, since OpenAI shut down Sora in April 2026. For video, see our list of free AI text-to-video generators.
Coding
Both now include an agentic coding tool. ChatGPT includes Codex on every plan, with limited access on Free and Go and more from Plus, and GPT-6 Astra is available to Plus users in Codex. Claude Pro includes Claude Code, which shares the same usage limits as chat. Developers who code for hours a day tend to need ChatGPT Pro or Claude Max for either tool. If you’re choosing a coding editor rather than a chatbot, our Claude Code vs Cursor comparison goes deeper.
Ads and Privacy
OpenAI started showing ads on ChatGPT’s Free and Go plans in India in 2026, beginning with about 50 brands, according to TechCrunch. Plus is ChatGPT’s cheapest ad-free plan. Anthropic said in February 2026 that “Claude will remain ad-free”. On both, you can opt out of having your conversations used for model training in settings on consumer plans.
ChatGPT vs Claude Which Should You Choose?
| You are | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A student or light user on a tight budget | ChatGPT Go | ₹399 a month with unlimited everyday chat |
| Someone who works with long documents | Claude Pro | Up to 1M tokens in chat at the same ₹1,999 |
| A creator who needs images | ChatGPT Plus | Image generation built in |
| A free user who dislikes ads | Claude Free | No ads, though usage is limited |
| A developer | Try both | Codex and Claude Code are both included; compare on your own repo |
| A heavy all-day user | ChatGPT Plus or Pro | Unlimited everyday chat avoids hitting weekly limits |
Many professionals use both: ChatGPT for quick questions, images and voice, and Claude for long documents and careful writing. At ₹1,999 each, running both for a month is a reasonable way to decide. Our ChatGPT Plus guide covers whether the upgrade is worth it, and you can cancel ChatGPT Plus any time.
