Decision checklist
GPTZero combines AI-text detection with tools that can record how writing develops. That distinction matters in education and editorial work: a detector score examines the submitted text, while Writing Replay can show edits, typing and pasted material within a tracked session. Neither view alone provides the whole history of a document.
A useful workflow begins by explaining the writing policy and enabling the appropriate tracking before drafting. The reviewer can then discuss a flagged passage alongside revisions and the writer’s sources. A large paste may warrant a question, but it could be the author’s own material drafted elsewhere. Avoid treating a visible event as an automatic finding of misconduct.
The Google Docs extension supports replay of document activity where the history is available. Other tracked writing sessions depend on enabling the relevant recording workflow. If a writer imports a finished draft or works in an untracked application, the missing history cannot be recovered merely by scanning the final document.
Shareable records make an editorial conversation easier, but sharing should be deliberate because the record may expose draft text and revisions. Before using the service for confidential client documents or student work, review the applicable account and API data-handling terms rather than assuming every GPTZero interface has the same storage policy.
AI detection estimates whether text resembles patterns associated with generated writing. Plagiarism checking looks for matching sources. One is not a substitute for the other, and a document can raise a concern in one check while passing the other. Choose a workflow that addresses the actual policy being reviewed.
The official FAQ says detection is stronger with longer prose and warns against punitive decisions based solely on a result. English-language prose is a central training context, so validate suitability for the language and document type your team uses. For GPTZero pricing, obtain the current plan rate, word allowance and replay or plagiarism entitlement from the account checkout or sales team. Keep API requirements in a separate cost line until their billing terms are confirmed.

Worked exampleA team of 3 reviewers processing 100 essays of 1,500 words needs capacity for 150,000 words each month, before reruns. Request a quote confirming 3 seats, shared word limits, plagiarism access and any API usage. A reliable monetary total cannot be calculated without that quote; no paid rate is assumed.

The official pricing page did not provide reliably retrievable paid rates during verification. Do not interpret an unconfigured team-calculator value of zero as a free paid plan. Self-service subscriptions exist, but verify the actual account checkout rate and allowances. Website subscription quotas and API billing must not be assumed interchangeable.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Educators and editors who can incorporate tracked writing sessions and a discussion of draft history | Editors and education teams reviewing long-form prose and needing AI analysis plus plagiarism reports | Content agencies and web publishers reviewing substantial English-language articles from multiple writers | Publishers and content agencies checking unpublished articles for web matches or reviewing copied published pages |
| Starting price | Contact sales for a verified paid quote; free detection access is available | US$18/month Essential; US$10/month equivalent billed US$120 annually | US$14.95/month Pro; US$12.95/month equivalent billed US$155.40 annually | US$0.03 per Premium plagiarism search for the first 200 words, plus US$0.01 per additional 100 words or part |
| Free plan / trial | Free detector access; current account-specific quotas require confirmation | 14-day trial with 2,000 credits | Basic free AI detector: 3 scans/day, up to 2,000 words/scan | Limited free searches for published URLs and a free text comparison tool |
| Biggest limitation | Neither a classifier score nor an incomplete writing replay can establish the full authorship history of a document | AI and plagiarism scanning together consume 3 credits per word, and unused monthly credits do not roll over | AI-detection scores cannot establish authorship, and combined AI-plus-plagiarism scans consume twice the credits of a single check | Web matches identify similar wording, not ownership or misconduct; no match cannot prove universal originality |

Not fully. Replay depends on the available document history or tracked session. A finished draft imported from another application does not carry a complete record of its earlier creation.
No. A paste can come from the writer's own draft, notes or quoted material. Use the event as context and ask about its origin instead of making an automatic accusation.
No. AI detection classifies writing patterns; plagiarism checking searches for source matches. Confirm the selected plan includes each workflow you need.
Only after it is configured and its billing terms are confirmed. A zero or incomplete placeholder is not reliable evidence of a free paid plan.
No. The official FAQ cautions against punitive decisions based only on detector output. Review draft history, sources and the student's explanation.
No. Confirm API access, rates, word limits and data handling separately. A browser subscription and an API contract can have different commercial terms.
