Start with the developer journey

Mintlify is a documentation platform for teams explaining how a technical product works. A useful first project is a complete path from account creation to one successful API request, followed by the likely error cases. Publishing dozens of endpoint pages is less helpful if readers cannot obtain credentials, choose the correct environment or understand the response. Build that journey before concentrating on visual customisation.

Its docs-as-code model stores pages as files in a documentation repository. Contributors can edit locally or through the browser editor. That suits teams where engineers own API detail and a writer owns explanations. Decide who reviews each kind of change, which branch represents the published site and how a release reaches the documentation.

Keep API reference and examples aligned

The API playground can generate interactive endpoint pages from an OpenAPI specification. It sends real requests and displays responses, so the specification becomes an operational input rather than merely a downloadable attachment. Validate required fields, authentication and response schemas before inviting customers to try an endpoint.

For a payment or account-management API, use clearly labelled sandbox examples. A documentation request can still create a real resource if the endpoint and credentials point to production. Review proxy behaviour and browser-request requirements with an engineer. Generated reference pages do not explain business prerequisites, retry rules or safe recovery; those need deliberate writing and review.

Separate publishing value from AI value

The Starter tier is a reasonable way to evaluate documentation publishing with a small contributor group. Pro adds the assistant, agent and automations. Assess those against a recurring problem: repeated support questions, stale instructions after releases or slow review of proposed updates. A paid assistant is easier to justify when you can identify the questions it should resolve and review how it answers them.

Mintlify pricing should therefore be evaluated as both platform access and AI usage. An assistant that returns an answer, an automation that changes documentation and a narration request are different activities. Track them separately when forecasting a budget. Shared organisation credits also mean one busy project can affect the resources available to another.

Operate documentation as part of the release process

Use the local preview and a representative review checklist before publishing. Check navigation, code samples, links and authentication examples after a breaking product change. Assign an owner to pages describing older API versions so the site does not quietly mix incompatible instructions. A polished presentation cannot compensate for a request that fails when copied.

Before migrating, inventory old URLs and plan redirects. Compare the effort of maintaining source files, components and custom scripts with the team’s skills. Evaluate access control separately for public developer docs and private customer material. Teams needing central identity provisioning, granular roles or contractual hosting controls should discuss Enterprise rather than assume the free tier provides them.

Choose the documentation workflow you can sustain

Compare GitBook when collaborative knowledge editing is central, Document360 for a broader knowledge-base programme and Helpjuice for support-oriented knowledge content. Mintlify is a stronger shortlist candidate when repository ownership and interactive API reference are integral to how the product is shipped.

Starting price: $450/month. Model: Per-project subscription plus AI credit usage.

Worked exampleAt the displayed $450 monthly rate, one Pro project costs $450 × 12 = $5,400 per year before tax. Illustratively, 200 assistant answers × 25 credits plus 12 documentation updates × 250 credits use 8,000 credits, within 10,000 included credits. No narration or other projects are assumed.

Mintlify pros and cons

Strengths

  • Free publishing tier supports five editors
  • Git and browser editing support different contributors
  • API reference pages can derive from specifications
  • Playground lets developers try real requests
  • Fixed AI action credits allow volume-based budgeting

Limitations

  • Pro is a significant upgrade from free hosting
  • API specifications and examples still need maintenance
  • AI credits are shared across projects
  • Enterprise controls require a quote
  • Interactive requests need careful credential and environment handling
Biggest limitation: AI features sit behind a substantial paid-plan step, with a shared credit budget that must cover assistant answers, narration and automated updates.

Mintlify FAQs

Can non-developers edit Mintlify without using a local Git client?

Yes. The browser editor supports content changes and publishing, while the repository-backed model also supports local work. Define review ownership so both paths follow the same release process.

Does the API playground make real requests?

Yes. It submits API requests and displays responses. Use sandbox credentials and endpoints when appropriate, and review authentication and proxy settings before exposing write operations.

Can Starter use ongoing paid AI credits without upgrading?

The credit documentation says Starter does not include AI features and cannot purchase credits. Pro or Enterprise is required for ongoing assistant, agent, narration and automation use.

Do AI credits belong to one project?

The current documentation pools credits across the organisation. Each Pro project contributes 10,000 monthly credits, while project-specific overage settings control behaviour after the shared balance runs out.

Does every automation run consume credits?

A documentation-changing update costs 250 credits. Runs that find nothing to change or fail cost nothing under the documented fixed-action model.

Are SSO and self-hosting standard Pro capabilities?

Enterprise lists SSO, SCIM and role-based controls, and self-hosting as an available option. Confirm technical scope and contractual terms with sales rather than assuming Pro includes them.
