Decision checklist
Copyscape Premium lets an editor search for matching wording before an article is published. That is a different workflow from the free URL checker, which is useful when a page already exists online. For a publisher receiving freelance drafts, checking the text before approval gives time to replace unattributed passages or clarify quotations.
Open the matched sources rather than relying only on a summary. Boilerplate, properly attributed quotations and licensed material can produce legitimate similarities. The publication date, licence and surrounding context matter when deciding what to change. A matching passage is evidence of shared wording, not automatic evidence of who copied whom.
Batch searching helps review many pages, while the Premium API supports a repeatable checking step in a publishing pipeline. Keep track of retries and revisions because each search consumes prepaid balance. Word and PDF uploads are helpful for submissions that have not yet been added to a content management system.
Private Index allows comparisons against material you have added to your own index, including unpublished content. That can help an agency detect repeated passages across its client drafts. Indexing and searching have separate charges, and checking both the web and the private index counts as two searches rather than one combined free operation.
Copysentry is the ongoing monitoring service for selected published pages. Buying Premium search credit does not automatically turn monitoring on. Decide whether the problem is screening new work, watching existing pages for copies, or both, and budget for the corresponding service.
The official FAQ also describes AI-detection functionality, but that is distinct from source matching. Do not use the published plagiarism-search rate as an AI-detector quote. More fundamentally, neither a clean web search nor an AI probability establishes complete originality. Private, inaccessible or unindexed material can remain outside a web matching workflow, so combine the report with citations, editorial review and the writer’s explanation.
Starting price: US$0.03 per Premium plagiarism search for the first 200 words, plus US$0.01 per additional 100 words or part. Model: Prepaid usage-based plagiarism searches; monitoring and enterprise services priced separately.
Worked example100 articles of 1,000 words checked once each cost US$11 in Premium plagiarism searches: each search is US$0.03 + 8 x US$0.01 = US$0.11. Repeating that workload for 12 months uses US$132 of search credit, excluding tax, Private Index fees, monitoring and any separately priced AI checks.

Round additional word blocks up to the next 100 words. Premium API plagiarism checks use the same published search rate. Private Index additions have separate word-based fees; searching the private index and the web counts as separate searches. Copysentry is billed separately. The FAQ documents an AI detector, but its current price was not verified and the plagiarism rate must not be applied to it.

| Best for | Publishers and content agencies checking unpublished articles for web matches or reviewing copied published pages | Content agencies and web publishers reviewing substantial English-language articles from multiple writers | Editors and education teams reviewing long-form prose and needing AI analysis plus plagiarism reports | Educators and editors who can incorporate tracked writing sessions and a discussion of draft history |
| Starting price | US$0.03 per Premium plagiarism search for the first 200 words, plus US$0.01 per additional 100 words or part | US$14.95/month Pro; US$12.95/month equivalent billed US$155.40 annually | US$18/month Essential; US$10/month equivalent billed US$120 annually | Contact sales for a verified paid quote; free detection access is available |
| Free plan / trial | Limited free searches for published URLs and a free text comparison tool | Basic free AI detector: 3 scans/day, up to 2,000 words/scan | 14-day trial with 2,000 credits | Free detector access; current account-specific quotas require confirmation |
| Biggest limitation | Web matches identify similar wording, not ownership or misconduct; no match cannot prove universal originality | AI-detection scores cannot establish authorship, and combined AI-plus-plagiarism scans consume twice the credits of a single check | AI and plagiarism scanning together consume 3 credits per word, and unused monthly credits do not roll over | Neither a classifier score nor an incomplete writing replay can establish the full authorship history of a document |

US$0.12: US$0.03 covers the first 200 words, and the remaining 850 words require nine additional 100-word blocks at US$0.01 each.
The free workflow checks published pages. Use Premium text entry or supported document uploads to check a draft before it has a public URL.
No. Copysentry is a separate monitoring subscription. A Premium search is a check at that point in time.
No. The official documentation treats those as separate searches. Adding material to Private Index also has its own word-based fee.
No. Review attribution, permissions and source context. Shared wording can be legitimate, and a match does not establish ownership or copying direction.
That published rate is for Premium plagiarism searches. The FAQ describes AI detection, but its current charge was not verified here; confirm it separately before budgeting.
We read pricing and plan limits from Copyscape's own pages (listed above) on the dates above. Where a vendor does not publish a price we can verify, we say so rather than estimate. Spotted something out of date? Tell us.
